FS25 Grass to Hay & Silage Guide
In Farming Simulator 25, you can make grass silage that you can use as animal feed in two ways. Stockpile grass in a silo and turn it into silage, or bale the grass with a baler and turn it into silage. In this article we will cover both methods.
Grass never disappears from the field and never withers. You can harvest it continuously.
Do not forget to fertilize after every harvest. The fertilization level drops by 50% after every harvest.
Planting Grass
Let’s work a field with a plow.

Let’s make the field ready for seeding with a cultivator.
(A plow and a cultivator are not always required; you can rent them.)

We apply lime.
(If you are using the Precision Farming DLC, it is useful to buy a lime spreading implement. Because after every harvest the field’s pH value will drop, and by spreading lime you can keep the value high.)

Let’s start seeding with a seeder. Since it is only needed once, let’s rent the best one. Let it do both seeding and fertilizing.
Buy 1 bag of seeds and 1 bag of solid fertilizer from the shop, approach the implement to fill it, and press the ?R? key.

Y – Change the seed and select Grass.

We need to cover the seeds with a roller so we do not lose yield.
(We also rent the roller because it is only needed once.)

In the month after planting, we apply the second fertilizer. Because a fertilizing implement is needed all the time, I recommend buying one.
Grass can be harvested 2 months after planting grass on the field.

Tip: If you wait 1 month after it says ready to harvest, field yield reaches maximum. Except for the winter season, you can harvest grass in 3-month periods.
Recommended Harvest Calendar
February (Growing) – March (Ready to Harvest) – April (Grass is mowed)
May (Growing) – June (Ready to Harvest) – July (Grass is mowed)
August (Growing) – September (Ready to Harvest) – October (Grass is mowed)
To mow grass you need to buy mowers. In the early stage you can use models that attach to both the front PTO and the rear PTO together. After you make money, the Krone BiG M 450 model will speed things up a lot.
Producing Hay and Using It as Feed
To use it directly as storable animal feed, the mowed grass needs to be dried. Then you can collect it or turn it into bales and store it.

To dry the grass you must buy a tedder from the shop. This airs out the mowed grass and lets it dry.

To collect the dried grass more easily, buying a windrower from the shop and gathering it into windrows speeds things up.

With a forage wagon you can collect the hay from the field and unload it into a feed silo or onto the ground. Later you can distribute this feed to the barns with a front loader.

With a square or round baler you can also turn the windrowed hay into bales and store it.

To collect the bales from the field you can use an automatic bale collector trailer.
Hay can be used as feed for sheep farms, goat farms, and cattle farms.

After harvest, the field’s yield drops by 50%. Fertilizing again will increase the yield.
Making Grass Silage
Instead of turning the cut grass into hay, we can collect it wet and turn it into silage.

Using a forage wagon, let’s collect the mowed grass and dump it into the bunker silo we built.

If the forage wagon has the silage additive feature, buy this product from the shop and fill it. This will increase the silage yield.

We unload the collected grass into the silo.

To turn the grass in the silo into silage, buy the Holaras Stego 485 Pro from Shop > Silo Compaction and compact the grass in the silo.

The goal is to compact the grass to 100%.

After Compaction reaches 100%, press the ?R? key to start blanketing the silo.

The fermentation process has started. The silage we prepared will ferment at a rate of 5% per hour. When it reaches 100%, the silage is ready.

The other method is to collect the grass with a baler, make bales, and then turn them into silage.

If you made square bales, buy an implement from the Wrappers category in the shop that matches the bale size and wrap the square bales one by one to start fermentation.

Advanced round baler models come with an integrated wrapper system. After making the bale, it wraps it and makes it ready for the fermentation process.
Tips
You will mow grass 3 times a year. Instead of drying and making windrows with a windrower after every cut, doing all of it in bulk after the 3rd harvest lightens your workload.
Using a round baler for silage production lightens the workload.

If you use the Krone BiG M 450 as a mower, you do not need a windrower. To do this, press CTRL + Y to switch to swath dropping mode (To change the mode, the mower arms must be open. press X)
