FS25 Horse Breeding Guide

Horses are among the animals you can raise in Farming Simulator 25. Compared with other livestock, they need more care: they must be cleaned regularly and ridden every day to stay fit. Riding a horse daily keeps it in shape and raises its value. Once a horse’s daily riding reaches 100%, it needs cleaning.

Info: When a horse’s daily riding reaches 100%, you gain 25% fitness. Riding every day keeps the horse fit.

How Do You Feed Horses?

Horses eat three types of feed. These are base food (57% effectiveness), hay (38% effectiveness), and root crops (5% effectiveness).

Base food: Oats, Sorghum
Hay: Hay bales
Root crops: Parsnips, Carrots, Red Beets

Oats are the main base food for horses. You can buy a 1,000-liter bag of oats from the shop. You can also grow all of the crops listed above yourself and use them as horse feed.

With the highest-effectiveness feed type, and by keeping daily riding and cleanliness at maximum, you can bring a horse’s health up to the maximum level.

How Do You Clean Dirty Horses?

Horses get 10% dirtier each day. If you completed daily riding, they get dirty at 100%. To clean a horse, buy a Horse Brush from Shop > Animals > Horse Brush, approach the horse, and clean it with the brush.

Each interaction raises cleanliness by 5%.

How Do You Ride a Horse?

Approach a horse in the pasture and press E to mount it. Press W to make the horse walk. Press again for a light trot, and again to gallop. S slows the horse down. To stop fully, you need to press it several times. To back up a stopped horse, press S. Horses can jump obstacles while galloping. Press SPACE to jump.

Horse Breeding Timelines

When you buy a horse from the Animal Dealer sell point, it is 0 months old. After 22 months of care it reaches maturity and can breed. For a horse to breed, its health must be good. That means regular water (if you built an open pasture), feed, daily riding, and cleaning.

A pregnant horse gives birth to a healthy foal after 11 months. The foal is the same color and breed as the pregnant mare. One month after giving birth, the horse can become pregnant again, so you can keep producing new foals this way.

How Much Feed and Water Do Horses Consume?

From age 0 until 22 months (maturity), a horse consumes 1,332 liters of feed and 736 liters of water. A horse older than 22 months consumes 95 liters of feed and 50 liters of water every month on a regular basis.

So one year of care for an adult horse needs 1,140 liters of feed and 600 liters of water. Daily riding and cleanliness do not affect feed consumption.

Can You Make Money Breeding Horses?

Yes, you can make money breeding horses. Care is demanding, though, so managing a large number of horses is exhausting. Still, we calculated the maximum profit you can get after buying a 0-month-old horse.

0-month-old horse = bought for 500€
22 months (max fitness) = can sell for 3,211€
33 months (max fitness) = 4,616€ + 1 foal can be sold
36 months (max fitness) = can sell for 5,000€

The maximum sale price for a horse is 5,000€.

How Do You Move Horses From One Pasture to Another?

The easiest way to move horses from one pasture to another is to ride them. Mount a horse, take it to the other pasture, and leave it there. It will then live in that pasture. You cannot drop horses into a pasture by jumping the fences. Open the gate and leave them inside that way.

How Do You Sell Horses?

To buy or sell horses, go to the Animal Dealer sell point. You can also buy and sell from the pasture using the paw icon, but that charges a transport fee. If you do not want to pay transport fees, buy a trailer.

Shop > Animal Transport > Kingston Trailers Belvedere

Drive this trailer up to the pasture paw icon and load up to 2 horses you want to sell. Then go to the Animal Dealer, interact with the paw-icon trigger again, and complete the sale.

Frequently Asked Questions About Horses

Below are frequently asked questions about horse breeding in Farming Simulator 25. Every answer was tested in-game. If you have other questions, leave them in the comments and we can answer them.

Question: If I ride a horse to the Animal Dealer, can I sell it there?

We tried this, and the answer is no. To sell horses you either haul them to the Animal Dealer in your own trailer, or sell from the pasture and pay the transport fee.

Question: Do you need 2 horses to breed?

No. Even a single horse can become pregnant. The game is not that realistic yet. Horses in the game have no gender. Each one has a unique name (newborns get a name automatically), but they have no sex. So if you have 2 horses, both can become pregnant.

Question: Can I rename my horse?

Yes. Press ESC > Animals > Pasture, select the horse you want to rename, then press SPACE.

Question: Do horses die?

Horses do not die after a certain age, and they also do not die if you stop giving them feed or water.

Question: Do horses rear up?

Unfortunately, horses do not rear up.
